Dahne, Engevik selected for
Emerging Leaders Forum
Hollings researchers Jennifer Dahne, Ph.D., and Mindy
Engevik, Ph.D., were selected for the National Academy
of Medicine’s Emerging
Leaders Forum. The Forum
is an “annual assembly of
outstanding early- and
mid-career professionals
with exceptional professional
promise, achievement and leadership in biomedical science,
health, health care and related fields.”
SRNT recognizes Cummings,
Toll for tobacco research work
Curran joins elite group of
surgeon scientists
Colorectal cancer surgeon Thomas Curran, M.D. (above),
is one of only 12 surgeons from across the country chosen
for the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Early-stage
Surgeon Scientist Program.
Hollings has a strong nicotine and tobacco research
program, which is evident by how the Society for Research
on Nicotine and Tobacco has recognized our members.

involved in all aspects
of nicotine and tobacco
research.
This three-year program ensures surgeons have time to
perform research. According to the NCI, the number of
physician-scientists in the U.S. has decreased from 4.7% of
doctors to only 1.5% since the 1980s. And yet physicianscientists have been invaluable in contributing to advances
in medicine, accounting for more than a third of the Nobel
Prizes in physiology or medicine.

Award, which it awards every
three years to someone who
has done groundbreaking
work in public health, public policy or epidemiological
research.
Curran is investigating why too few patients go home with
anticoagulants, commonly called blood thinners, to prevent
blood clots after gastrointestinal, gynecologic or urologic
cancer surgery.
In January 2023, Benjamin Toll, Ph.D., began serving as
president-elect of the group. His leadership role lasts for
three years, encompassing the president position in 2024
and past president in 2025.
