Focus on women
and cancer: Linda
Floyd Forum 2023
The Mega Lungs offer an interactive way to learn about the importance of lung health.
Walking through lung health education for
National Lung Cancer Screening Day
Hollings staff was at the Charleston Farmers Market in Marion Square on
Nov. 11, 2023, — along with an oversized set of inflatable lungs — in honor of
National Lung Cancer Screening Day.
Lung cancer screening uptake has been slow. Nationally, only about 6% of
people who are eligible for this screening actually get it. Screening is important
because finding lung cancer at an early stage leads to much better outcomes
for patients. To raise awareness about the non-invasive screening test, Hollings
and the Mega Lungs staked a spot at the market. And because the market
draws visiting tourists from outside South Carolina, Hollings partnered with the
American Lung Association in South Carolina to offer materials to tourists so
they could find screening locations in their home states.
The 7th “One-in-Three Afternoon
Tea — Annual Linda Floyd Forum
on Women’s Cancers” evoked tears
and laughter from attendees, who
heard from colon cancer survivor
Adriel Nutter (below, left), as well
as Hollings providers.
Colorectal surgeon Colleen
Donahue, M.D., (above, right),
hereditary cancer expert Kevin
Hughes, M.D., (above, left),
survivorship leader Evan Graboyes,
M.D., and dietitan Mary Jo Turner,
R.D., provided perspectives from
their areas of expertise on how
cancer affects women. Look for an
invitation to the next forum in
May 2025.
Who should be screened?
Individuals should schedule a consultation with one of our nurse practitioners if
they have all three of these risk factors:
• 50 to 77 years old.
• 20-pack-year smoking history (one pack a day for 20 years; two packs a day
for 10 years, etc.).
• Currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years.
Patients begin with a shared decisionmaking meeting to understand the pros
and cons of screening. If screening is agreed upon, a low-dose CT scan will
be scheduled.
