Hollings Annual Report 2023 FINAL - Flipbook - Page 23
The statistics reveal the need. The state is among the top 20 for cancer death
rate. In 2023, researchers expected 34,000 people in South Carolina to be
diagnosed with cancer along with more than 11,000 cancer deaths.

Additionally, cancer incidence rates in the state are higher
among Black people than white people for several
cancer types, and mortality rates are extraordinarily
high compared to the rate of incidence. There is also
a disparity in cancer outcomes between rural and urban
populations.
Among all South Carolinians, up to 75% of new cancer cases
and deaths are caused by preventable lifestyle factors β such as
tobacco use, poor diet, and lack of exercise β and limited access to
health care.
Mobile Health Units
Hollings
MUSC Hollings Cancer Center has two mobile health units that travel to all
46 counties in the state, partnering with Federally Qualified Health Centers,
churches, community centers, schools and employers. The Mammography
mobile health unit completed 367 mammography screenings for breast cancer
in 2023, and the Community Health Van provided 866 HPV vaccinations,
delivering a critical cancer prevention tool to populations who may not have
been able to access it before.
βThe HPV vaccine helps to prevent six cancer
types that are associated with the human
papillomavirus. As the only NCI-designated
cancer center in South Carolina, Hollings has
a responsibility to serve all people in the state,
regardless of where they may live.β
