Our history
Moorfields Eye Hospital was founded in
1805 through philanthropic support in
response to a public health crisis. Soldiers
in the Napoleonic War had contracted
blinding eye diseases when serving in
Egypt and on their return to the UK the
disease spread, particularly in cities.
