WAITING FOR WORDS
by Tom Weiss
we have to wait until Saturday
unless we want to do it
on the phone
because this woman I long for
can only stay a day.
she does it for me,
just the sight of her,
but that’s not the only
reason why:
it’s the words.
I’m trying to curate a life
with them.
she has lived them
since a child
much to her mother’s dismay.
on Saturday we’ll have impossibly
not enough time,
an hour if we’re lucky,
to read a few words
to each other.
she loves julian barnes
whom I don’t know.
I’m thinking more eudora,
but what about rimbaud
and the various williamses?
even donne before
we’re done,
trying to distill
two continents
into a single drop.
