telling him that you don’t want to buy this house.’
Ellen shook her head gently and sniffed. I realise she’s crying and take her in my arms, ‘there,
there, it’s alright.’
‘I’m sorry, it’s just that you remind me of Mum,’ she sniffs, ‘and I miss her.’
‘Come on, let’s have that tea. I’ve got a nice bit of gingerbread we can have with it.’
That’s where they find us in the living room, sitting side by side, chatting away like old friends.
Robert walks in, face red and eyes bulging, ‘How do you expect to purchase a property without
even bothering to look at it!’ He spits the words at Ellen, who takes a deep breath, stands up
and stares up at her brother.
‘Robert, I’m not interested,’ she pauses for effect, ‘I’m off to join the circus!’
At which point, we both collapse in fits of laughter.
