RISK
by Alan Dunnett
Do not look into the eyes. The eyes block
memory. Looking into them is not
a drowning but a consideration
that is hopeless and stops time. You repeat
and everything is normal for no line
has been crossed, it seems. Normal. Just normal.
Civilisation is evident. No
crazy rearrangement of the senses.
Instead, the soft flow of conversation
- but not the ebb, going out to darkness,
diminishing, and at once becoming
lost and found in the swell and in the storm.
Behind the wind are voices beckoning.
Ignore them at your peril; at peril,
though, unstop your ears.
