DOG-MAN
by John Grey
The man in him
survives on a small pension,
the dog, on scraps of raw meat.
"Don't worry,"
he says to the children,
"I won't bite."
But, in fact, he will.
His conversation
is peppered with growls,
and he often barks loudly
before bedtime.
People stop him in the street,
to catch up
or pat his hairy head.
"Hi Sam"
or "Here Sam,"
he answers to both.
