insisted that he visit this place? The little boy stood, pulled up
his trousers and left the room.

He crossed the hall quickly, past the beetle still humping the
wall and the winking, grinning miniatures. There was no mirror at
this end of the hall in which to see whether his visit to the
bathroom had changed him at all, and he walked blind back into the
room.

“Here he is,” Mother smiled, and his siblings welcomed him back
with toothy grins. He might have slit their throats.
“Well?” they asked. “What did you think?”
The chair. The cubicle. The perm. The crotch.
“Yes,” he told them. “I really liked it.”
The family blinked, expectant. They wanted more.
“And the shower isn’t too bad either,” he added, and he stretched
his mouth to join them in their grinning, while revulsion frothed
like vomit in his throat.
