SIX OF US
by Matt Dennison
How did the six of us manage to fit
our various and active wounds into
the same tub, use the same toilet,
flush without being heard, piss
onto that two-inch porcelain lip
between splash and silence in order
not to disturb the dining room occupants
four feet away and never touch each other?
We children, fed, all went up the same stairs
under the same whips in the same darkness
of the same nights and never passed another
on the way. Something like a likeness, faces
full of weather—his ignorant, his beatific,
hers tiny, mine unimaginable, theirs
staring at the ceiling below us—
driving us all.
