LATER
by Glenn Pape
When the rooms upstairs go empty
we’ll sit across from each other
at the dining room table.
Our hands will barely flutter,
framing our coffee cups
like wings at rest.
At least once each morning
we’ll respond to the silence
as if it were a footfall on the stairs,
barely heard
above the soft rustle
of newspaper.
Our heads will turn
a quarter turn
on our stiff necks.
Our eyes will dart
to the landing, pause,
then drift toward the clock on the mantle.
You’ll reach for your purse.
I’ll ask about our plans for dinner and, still wondering,
we’ll continue through our day.
