ON THE BENCH
by Matt Gilbert
Loose limbed, him,
I’d imagine – usually,
but right now, tight
within hurt’s stiff grip
he bobs up, then
down, struggling
to control racking,
whole-body sobs,
big fingers jerking
up to run through
his own long dreads,
all twitch and nerves,
she stays calm, steady,
except, for one slim arm,
darting, like a Dunnock,
in and out from hedges,
hand briefly resting
on his shaking
shoulder, caring still,
although resigned,
to what looks like
the end, of something
- unable not to witness,
my sandwich fills with dust.
