InterviewingOn-Site Interviews• These interviews tend to be much morein-depth than the phone or campusinterview, lasting anywhere from onehour to a full day or longer. However, thepreparation process for an on-site interviewremains the same: know the employer, knowyourself, and anticipate and practice possiblequestions.Phone and Virtual InterviewsMany employers will conduct their first round interviews via telephone or virtually. These interviews areused as a precursor to an in-person interview.• Make sure you are in a quiet, comfortable environment where you will not be disturbed.• Smile! Regardless of whether the employer can seeyou, it can help you come across as personable.• Give yourself plenty of time to travel to thesite, taking into consideration possible trafficdelays. If possible, you may want to take atest drive over to the site a few days beforethe interview.Phone Interviews• Make sure your cell phone is fully charged beforeyou start the interview.• Have your resume or CV, job description, and notesin front of you to glance at but minimize the soundof shuffling papers.• Be prepared for pauses and silence. If there is anextended silence between questions, you can askconfirming questions such as “Was my answerclear?”• Be friendly and courteous to everyone youencounter. You never know who has input inthe hiring decision.• Employers will typically (but not always)reimburse travel expenses if your interviewis in another city or state. It is important thatyou clarify these details with the employerwhen arranging the interview.Virtual Interviews• Check your internet connectivity, sound, and anyapplications before the interview to make surethey are working properly.• Dress as if you are at an in-person interview. Besure that your responses address everyone on thepanel.
