Chief Executive, RNID
For me, leadership is about taking organisations to places they would
otherwise not have gone. This undoubtedly requires a balance of courage
and competence, but I have found throughout my career that the biggest
determinant on business success is the extent to which there is shared values
amongst leaders. So, I place a premium on creating diverse and high trust
teams – the ultimate foundation. It’s important to choose where to dedicate
your time. If you pursue everything, you get nothing. Focus really does matter
and the ability to create an intense focus on the critical few things is a good
self-challenge. I push myself to spend time thinking about the future and to
be curious about where an organisation needs to be in 1, 5 and 10 years’ time.
Making the case for change while you’re successful – i.e., 昀椀xing the roof while
the sun is shining – is an important discipline.

My journey started in the corporate environment when I became a lawyer and
then a banker. I took many great things from those experiences, but I became
fatigued with doing the same things in the same way to achieve the same
results. I decided to focus on my personal development by doing an MBA at
Leeds University. It gave me the space and time to understand my “why” and
to explore the bene昀椀ts of stepping out of my comfort zone. I continued my
own leadership development and supported others by coaching entrepreneurs
and eventually took the plunge to become an entrepreneur. My biggest
development as a leader has been understanding the power of having a growth
mindset and encouraging others to do the same. I am now the CEO of a nonfor-pro昀椀t organisation called Better Connect. I work with an incredible team
and together we strive towards enabling people across Yorkshire to thrive in
life and work. I am in my “happy place” and I work hard every day to make sure
that everyone else in the team feels the same way.
