Karen Addington,
Chief Executive, JDRF
Leadership in the voluntary sector is a privilege. I carry with me, every day,
in every decision I make, the trust of people with type 1 diabetes to lead JDRF
to 昀椀nd cures. I have to make hard choices and leadership with insu昀케cient
resources is a challenge. I ask a lot of my sta昀昀, my volunteers, and myself.
I greatly value those who choose to focus their skills and time on a career
in a charity. It makes me angry when charity sta昀昀 are considered somehow
second rate. Charity sta昀昀 are talented, as good at their jobs as people in other
sectors, plus they are resourceful, resilient and have a real sense of purpose.
I am honoured to lead the dedicated, professional JDRF team. JDRF is an
international network of charities. I have CEO colleagues across the globe,
doing a similar role in a di昀昀erent geography which gives me access to diversity
of thought from a peer group who understand my successes and challenges
and are generous with their advice, experience and resources.

One truism about leadership is that it is personal; developed through formative
experiences that ready us to take on the complex myriad of opportunities and
challenges presented. My social work background has always directly informed
my leadership style in every role and has continued in my approach as Chief
Executive: Social work values – The principle that the views and needs of service
users are at the centre of designing and delivering Services. Direct line of
sight – I often walk the 昀氀oor to speak with sta昀昀 directly, which helps maintain
a sense of the quality-of-Service delivery in a way that goes beyond reading
datasets and report. Collaboration – Success is dependent on the relationships
we develop. By empowering sta昀昀 and Partners to bring their knowledge, skills,
and talent to Service delivery has the e昀昀ect of ensuring that even the biggest of
challenges can be overcome together.

Director, Museum of
London
Who sits down and sets out to be a “leader” that’s not the end objective. It’s
more about how can I have the maximum in昀氀uence to change the world for
the better. It’s not been a linear path for me, it’s been about jumping into
gaps, sometimes yawning chasms, not to 昀椀ll a hole but to build a bridge to
the other side. It’s been about enabling others to cross that bridge and join
the organisations and causes that I have been a part of. Turning the public
on to big ideas, concepts and desperate needs including; the Environment,
animal and habitat conservation, to biodiversity loss and engagement with
science, art, culture, history and much more. Helping to nurture a cultural
infrastructure of which museums are a huge part, and now creating the best
museum for London, with the best team. It’s an enormous responsibility and
totally exhilarating.
