I think leadership is all about driving change through telling stories. If I inspire
colleagues and partners with a strong vision, what they do in response is
always better than what I would have asked them to do. This is why leadership
is also about listening. I 昀椀nd it frustrating when I hear Government Ministers
criticise charities speaking up for communities. In part because it’s my job to
defend charities’ right to campaign, but more so because I don’t understand
why anyone in a leadership position would not want to hear from those who
disagree with them. It is so important to me to continually stretch my thinking,
and the best way to do this is listening to those who think di昀昀erently me. This
means I make better decisions.

Leadership is about living your values without compromise; being authentic;
being comfortable with vulnerability; constantly investing in relationships;
and creating the environment for the leaders around you to grow, to lead
with con昀椀dence and to learn from your own and their mistakes. Above all else
leadership is not about name , rank or number - it is about cherishing your
integrity, being honest, acting with humility, playing to strengths and fostering
a culture where learning, feedback, high challenge and high support all have
their equally important cultural footholds. Fundamentally, I have learned that
leadership is most de昀椀nitely about the people around you.
