It seems trite to say leadership is a privilege. But in the voluntary sector it
is. I know that having worked in or with each sector. We can and should be
genuinely strategic if we want to reach beyond those we can support directly
through our wider in昀氀uence and advocacy. We work with people who are
committed to what they do. And for causes that matter and can create positive
change for people’s lives. But that doesn’t mean we are automatically on the
side of the angels. Black Lives Matter, and the subsequent wider drive for
greater Inclusion, is a wake-up call to us all - personally and organisationally to do better and reach further. A reminder that good leadership is rarely about
certainty and always about continuing to ask fundamental questions of self.

I sometimes say wryly to my colleagues that my personal experience of being
a CEO is that you need to be skilled in the art of mediocrity: you’ll end up
doing absolutely everything that doesn’t fall to someone else, and essentially
the job is to catch whatever asteroid comes hurtling out of space towards
you. Ultimately the role requires you to accept and be content with a larger
proportion of your time putting out 昀椀res, and the rest winning. For any CEO
in 2023, that means progress. Maybe this is the job where my analytical skills
have really come into their own: I’m fascinated by the design of how things
work. A temperament that leans towards humour is also handy, to keep things
in perspective.

District Council
Chief Executive of North West Leicestershire District Council since 2022, I’d
previously worked in a variety of senior roles at district and county council
level. It’s a fantastic place and I feel privileged to be able to shape its future.
One of the fastest growing districts in the country, it’s centrally located, at
the heart of the national forest, home to East Midlands Airport, Donington
Park racetrack, big brands and specialist independent businesses. This brings
advantages but also puts pressure on our communities. An organization of
our size can’t do everything, but I try to encourage sta昀昀 to be proud of what
we do and make the most positive impact we can. For me, leadership is about
creating the environment for innovation to 昀氀ourish, connecting with partners,
championing the area and encouraging ambition. Investing in your personal
resilience is also important to bring the best version of yourself to work each
day!
