Leadership is about empowering individuals to be the very best they can
be; I am incredibly lucky to work with and learn from team members who
are amazing at their jobs. I am currently working on an organisational
transformation that is about fundamentally changing direction, inspiring a
collective e昀昀ort to achieve challenging goals that will enable our organisation
to thrive in a challenging sector. Having worked in low trust teams with poor
leadership, creating a culture of trust is extremely important to me. I aim to
be transparent and fair in everything I do and encourage people to hold me
to account if they feel I am behaving in any other way. Nobody is perfect so
absolutely tell me when I am not hitting the mark. Being a leader is hard. We
all need to take time to pause and celebrate the small successes that are hard
won. We all need to do more of this.

My leadership journey has involved councils and time outside local govt,
right across the UK, from London to the North West, West Yorkshire and
also working nationally. I’ve bene昀椀tted hugely from diversity of experience
and job role, good mentoring which I still use, and from being surrounded
by the wonderful and diverse leadership family we have in local govt. Today
leadership to me means managing uncertainty, leading complex teams with
demanding and diverse goals, and always expecting the unexpected. I also
think it’s essential to celebrate and learn from di昀昀erence – to recruit people
better than you, and to celebrate challenge as one of the best ways of learning
in organisational life. One of the things councils do best is coping with the
unpredictable, and it is this with a relentless focus on place and communities
that is at the heart of leadership for me.

Wonderful people have mentored me,
championed me, challenged me, and
become true friends, and I try to gift this
forward to others.
