As the chief executive of a London council like Camden, I always start from the
position that you can resolve anything if you put skin into it and really care.
During my years in public service, I have walked in the shoes of many people
and worked towards 昀椀nding solutions for seemingly impossible problems, such
as rehousing Afghan families in new houses we built for private sale to support
our council house building. This was a bold and courageous decision which
made them able to start their new lives as integral part of the community.
What I’m interested in is gathering insights and letting solutions emerge
through an inclusive process. It is all about enabling community leadership so
we can see solutions emerge from collective intelligence. I want everyone who
has a stake in the matter to be involved so that they feel empowered by their
own agency.

My leadership journey began in childhood. Youngest of three daughters, born
to a Baptist Minister, from a young age, I would make pastoral visits with my
parents, listening to families from all walks of life, with their di昀케culties, joys,
and sorrows. This opened my eyes to the vastness of human experience.
Although not wealthy, my home was full of books. I am an avid reader which
has served me well as a leader, with books providing endless opportunities
to explore the human psyche and ideas. This led me to study English, but I
was soon drawn to working with people, and I have worked with child and
family-related causes for over 25 years. Wonderful people have mentored me,
championed me, challenged me, and become true friends, and I try to gift this
forward to others. I believe in the sweet spot where passion and purpose meet,
and I can truly say that every day has been a gift.

In the last 15 years, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse set of
individuals (performing artists, creatives, professionals) in the arts, globally.
Each interaction provided me a learning opportunity that has shaped the
leader I am today, and something I hold core to my journey has been the
importance of being one’s authentic self in any environment. I believe this
allows leaders to build relationships based on respect, trust and honesty;
the cornerstone of a strong organisational culture. Given the immediate
challenges we face today (macro-economic, socio-political, access and more),
the need for a more nuanced leadership that considers the wider impact of
its actions is paramount. Lastly, it is the inherent responsibility for those who
昀椀nd themselves in leadership positions to help build the next generation. I was
fortunate to have such leaders guiding me, and I hope to pay it forward in the
same way.
