Ambiguity words:
uncertain, changing, adapting
Change, transformation and evolution remain at the heart of many personal
leadership journeys for this group of chief executives. Leaders recognise that how
they meet the uncertainty that characterises our times will impact on the ability of
their organisations to thrive, and on their own success. In 2023, few organisations
would expect a 昀椀ve or even three year strategic plan to complete without adjustment
along the way. Yet this is also a time of reform, of disruption and of shifts towards
what would previously been seen as radical thinking. In January 2019 – one year
before the pandemic – we wrote a piece called ‘Leading in a VUCA world’, exploring
four themes: volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Although the world in
which we are living and working now is di昀昀erent, the same themes were represented
in the words you chose four years later. Uncertainty? That’s nothing new. Over the
last few years, chief executives have turned working with ambiguity into an art form:
in fact, the one certainty they have is that there is no certainty to bank on. Through
their positive and big picture outlook, their agility and entrepreneurialism, their
personal resilience and unshakeable belief in what they do and in their people, the
strongest leaders exist in a state of “perfect imperfection” through which they will
achieve their end goal.
Leadership is not about fitting a stereotype
or expectation – I’m authentically me with
my strengths and challenges.
