Leadership is about learning and evolving, adapting to new ideas and a
continually changing environment. The pressures of leadership are di昀昀erent to
a decade ago – technology has given us greater access to information but at the
same time you need to be able to cut through the noise and identify the things
that matter most. We need to be open to challenge and di昀昀erent approaches,
whilst having con昀椀dence to set a clear direction and inspire others. A well-led
organisation is when everyone is clear about the overall direction and their
individual role. A con昀椀dent leader can build that sense of shared direction,
without feeling the need to do everything. There is perhaps a popular view that
leadership is about toughness. Leadership does mean taking tough decisions,
but it is possible to do so with kindness that ensures others are treated with
decency.

Purpose, Process and Passion are the three words I have chosen to describe my
leadership journey, embracing roles as a Director-General in Whitehall through
to my current life as a non-executive Chair. Purpose: always spend time with
colleagues and stakeholders on what they think the organisation is for, and
what they want it to achieve. Whether this is through a mission statement, a
set of values or a new multi-year Strategy, getting agreement on purpose is
a key foundation stone for any subsequent change. And the very process of
debate getting there usually pays dividends. Process: all organisations today are facing change. Managing that change successfully requires getting
the basics right: regular open dialogue, clarity on sta昀昀 roles and objectives,
honest appraisals and evaluations, and Boards discussing the right things in
the right way at right time. Passion: good leaders need passion and resilience.
They tell stories, bring people with them, and show resilience in the face of the
inevitable challenges. In short they walk the talk.
