What3Words Leadership Locations Report - A celebration of leaders everywhere and their personal journeys 2023 - Final Design - Flipbook - Page 42
My leadership journey has been somewhat unique as a Founder CEO. I’d never
considered myself a leader prior to setting up Breaking Barriers. In fact, it
was pretty much my 昀椀rst job - so I hadn’t even learned how to be an e昀昀ective
employee, let alone an e昀昀ective employer. The most important thing I learned
in the early days is the importance of authenticity, honesty and vulnerability.
There’s no point in pretending you have all the answers when you don’t. I
learned that the hard way; thinking I had to show myself to be ‘all knowing’
when I clearly wasn’t. People warm to you, respect and trust you more, the
more you are able to adhere to these 3 principles. It took me some years to
shake o昀昀 the imposter syndrome, but I have now reached a place where I feel
like I am an e昀昀ective leader.

My leadership journey started when I was 16 and was inspired by a quote from
Kurt Hahn when I attended an Outward-Bound Course in Wales, “We are all
better than we know. If only we can be brought to realise this, we may never be
prepared to settle for anything less.” I started seeking opportunities
to help me unlock my potential which then quickly evolved into how I serve
others to get the best for themselves. My leadership journey allowed me to see
the world, climb Kilimanjaro, have dinner with the Royals in The Palace and
many other exciting experiences, most importantly it led me to now, where
through my many positions I get to help thousands of people annually. The
term leadership makes me uncomfortable; I am happier in-between places and
serving silently without notice, leadership gives me a responsibility which I try
to use to serve others.
