What3Words Leadership Locations Report - A celebration of leaders everywhere and their personal journeys 2023 - Final Design - Flipbook - Page 41
My leadership journey has been largely unplanned but a dynamic and
transformative one nonetheless marked by diverse experiences across both
the globe and across commercial and charity sectors. All driven by a desire for
new experiences and continuous learning. What provided consistency between
these varied roles is a strong belief that leadership is not just about guiding
a team but also about fostering an environment where new ideas can thrive.
Today as we all work in a complex and rapidly changing world with increasing
demands on all, resilience becomes a key facet in any leaders’ armoury, one
that needs to be prioritised as we need to strengthen our personal resilience
in the face of both internal and external challenges whilst endeavouring
to maintain a positive attitude and lead in pursuit of the bigger picture.
With this comes the need for compassionate leadership that advocates for
empowerment championing an environment that is both meritocratic and
inspiring.

My 昀椀rst word is yellow because I have learnt that leaders must be positive,
even sunny. We need to be people who are happy in our own skins and bearing
our responsibilities with ease, and always 昀椀rst to compliment and recognise
our sta昀昀 and volunteers; and to create fun. My second word is spicy. We work
with wonderful, talented people who would do good work whether or not we
were there. We need to add spice to the melange of ingredients that brings
out more fully the 昀氀avours and creates a unique and wonderful mix. It is
sometimes called coherence or direction, but tri昀氀e is more tasty! My third word
is trampoline. Together with our teams we create a mesh that supports us all
and o昀昀ers support to all, so that no-one falls through the cracks. And on good
days we can turn very high somersaults!

I know I’m not what people always expect when they meet the Chief Executive
of the Coal Authority – an out gay woman, with pink hair and bright clothes.
Leadership is not about 昀椀tting a stereotype or expectation – I’m authentically
me with my strengths and challenges. I trust those around me. I aim to raise up
voices, develop strategy and empower people to deliver. I’m always looking for
new ways to connect people with what we’re here to do – that means talking,
really listening and learning. I’m excited to make a di昀昀erence every day but
even more excited to enable our awesome people to deliver and for them to
feel really proud of that. I want everyone to feel able to bring their whole self
to work so that they can be their best selves, feel respected and valued and
deliver great outcomes for the communities we serve across Great Britain.
