I have worked in the not-for-pro昀椀t sector for almost 20 years and the last 15
in senior leadership positions. I feel proud to be part of a sector that keeps
昀椀nding new ways to evolve, to become more inclusive, to respond and to
change. The last four years have been some of the toughest our sector has
ever seen, leading through a permanent state of crisis. Environmental fragility,
pandemic, cost of living, war in Europe all of which compel us as leaders to lead
in a di昀昀erent way. In a trauma informed way. In an emotionally aware way. In
a 昀氀exible way. In a vulnerable way. These are the skills I continuously fall back
on over the last four years to lead my team, to build trust, to fuel energy and
to create a high performing organisation despite challenges of the external
environment.

The pivotal moment in my leadership journey was when I uprooted myself from
20 years working in health and became the Constitution Director. Overnight
I lost my subject matter expertise and gained a team of 180 people. With
little to contribute to policy thinking, I focused on the team as people: asking
questions, listening ‘behind the answer’ and tuning into my intuition when I
sensed dissonance. It felt disconcertingly unlike real work but I soon discovered
that I could lead without giving people the answers, by helping them realise
they already had them. Allocating my time to team-organised events, open
door sessions and development initiatives for the most junior sta昀昀 said far
more about my priorities than words could ever have done. I took from the
experience a de昀椀nition of leadership that has stayed with me ever since:
leadership is making it possible for other people to do their best work.
