I was raised with a strong work ethic and a mindset centred on serving others.
To me, true leadership means sel昀氀essly prioritising the needs and goals of
the team, organisation, or community over personal gain or recognition. It
demands unwavering dedication, resilience, and determination. A leader must
also possess self-awareness, knowing when to step back and delegate tasks
and when to be directly involved. E昀昀ective leadership requires pro昀椀ciency in
all aspects of their operation, and deep respect for their workforce, including
being willing to deliver what they expect from others. The best leaders excel
when they empower and enable their team, creating an environment where
each individual can thrive, grow, and contribute their unique talents. This
nurturing of talent is crucial for succession and ensuring a lasting legacy
aligned with the organisation’s mission and purpose. Taking on a leadership
role unexpectedly in my career, I feel a sense of duty rather than a calling
because I see limited opportunities for my peers to step into leadership roles,
both in private and public enterprise. I aim to demonstrate that leaders can
emerge from unconventional backgrounds and deliver exceptional results.
In our current era of collapse and system failures, where basic services,
infrastructure, and cultural and community assets are struggling to meet our
needs and support our collective potential, leadership and a positive vision for
the future are more critical than ever. It’s time to reconsider traditional notions
of leadership in terms of style, form, and e昀昀ectiveness and to recognise and
cultivate leadership potential wherever it may arise.

To me, three key themes are particularly important for e昀昀ective organisational
(and personal) leadership: Commitment – in a senior leadership role you
work hard and are completely committed to the intellectual and emotional
challenges it presents. That commitment is so much easier to make if you
gain a true sense of ful昀椀lment from your role and the opportunity it presents
to drive change and impact. Working in a charity provides that ful昀椀lment
in spades. Communication – I think it’s hard for modern leaders to overcommunicate. I’m encouraged to 昀椀nd increasing numbers of colleagues
keen to know what decisions are being made and why. I regard Internal
Communications as a vital capability to deliver purpose and engagement and
build trust and inclusive cultures. Agility - in a volatile World and in the face
of challenges often well beyond our control, there are likely to be bene昀椀ts to
market-led, less-prescriptive Strategies, accompanied by cultures and ways of
working that are pragmatic, promote innovation, value insight and embrace
change.
