As a society we are too focused on the creation of wealth above all else. It is
glori昀椀ed in books, tv shows and podcasts and epitomised in lists like the Times
Rich List. Yet rarely do we think about the social value people create. The
badges of wealth are often clear but we never know how many lives the person
next to us on the train has changed – or not. These are challenging times to
lead social sector organisations but rarely have they been such important ones
too. In that sense it is a huge privilege to lead a charity in 2023, having the
excitement of running a successful business but one that also plays it’s little
part in changing the world.

Leadership, for me, is about setting a clear strategic vision and direction of
travel for the organisation, as well as creating the right conditions to enable
successful delivery of our priorities and ambitions.
Clear communication is key – it’s really important that sta昀昀 at all levels of the
organisation understand what we want to achieve and how they can contribute
to that journey, as well as role modelling the values and behaviours we expect
from them.
It’s so important, more now than ever, to be able to challenge the status quo,
review and develop existing processes and plans, be able to react to policy
change and challenging external factors to ensure we are 昀椀t for the future. It’s
also about being able to motivate colleagues to strive to achieve improvements
and in昀氀uence positive change, as well as being able to show strength -and
empathy- when required, as well as being human!
