I’ve been privileged always to work with brilliant, talented and ambitious
people, who bring a passion and commitment to everything they do. And
it’s channelling that passion and commitment of leaving things better
tomorrow, than they are today, that’s driven individual, team and ultimately
organisational success. Remembering too, not everyone works at the same
pace, or is on top form everyday, or is as con昀椀dent or comfortable in the
workplace; and that outside, we never really know what’s going on in people’s
lives, and whether they might just be in need of a little space, time, support or
understanding. Being a good leader, has always been about caring for those I
work with; engaging, listening, sharing and including. Supporting people during
the tough times, helping them when they’re struggling, picking them up when
they fall, giving them space to speak out; empowering them to try new things
and celebrating every step of the way. Committing to creating a culture of care
and a set of shared core values, that, whatever they are, promote respect for
each other, positive behaviours, and are clear about how our values build our
community of success, is a 昀椀ne foundation from which to build. If there’s one
thing I’ve learnt, it’s that investing in your people, their development, their
welfare and wellbeing; helping and supporting them on their journey (be it with
you or elsewhere) and leading through honesty, transparency, accessibility and
A LOT of energy and positivity; is never time or e昀昀ort wasted.

Locations are often de昀椀ned by their architecture. My favourite communities
are 昀椀lled with beautiful buildings, from the industrial revolution’s grandeur of
Newcastle to the bucolic stone cottages of Chipping Camden. Throughout my
journey from community work to the big national, I have de昀椀ned my role as
chair of the executive team as that of Cultural Architect. De昀椀ning the Cultural
Architect as leader has been my soul [sic] goal in leading. Drucker didn’t say
culture eats strategy for breakfast, but he did agree that it’s persistent. It is
culture that de昀椀nes us, our organisations, and our people. My compass on my
journey is the culture I want to foster. I know which way to go as I lead because
I know what it’s like to include people, value people, celebrate people as well
as encourage, challenge, and change alongside people. I have started on the
journey, but I have by no means arrived!
