From an early age, I was a leader without knowing it. From being captain of the
school sports teams to Sixer in Cubs, Coaching rugby and holding positions in
clubs, groups and charities from secretary, social chairman to chairman. From
here my professional leadership journey started. My 昀椀rst job was a Swimming
instructor, then onto a trainee Manager role, gaining experience across every
department in a local authority. I became the youngest joint use multi-site
manager in England. I have studied throughout my career gaining quali昀椀cations
including an MBA. My career spans over 34 years, across England and Wales,
in over 11 organisations in Public Private and Third sectors, from Manager to
Deputy Chief Executive to today where I am Chief Executive, back where I 昀椀rst
started as a Swimming instructor. The one thing that has been and remains the
driving force, is improving opportunities for the community.
Leadership in today’s dynamic and evolving world is both complex and
multifaceted, where a balance of skills, experience and di昀昀erent leadership
styles is paramount. My experience shows that great Leaders must guide,
in昀氀uence and inspire both the individual and the wider team, be they internal
or external to the organisation. It is not just experience, values and behaviours
also play a vital role. Adaptability and 昀氀exibility, transparency, encourage
innovation, emotional intelligence, Diversity, Collaboration, co-production,
learning (continual personal and professional development), resilience,
integrity, empowerment and listening are the foundations on which Leadership
is built. Leadership is not just about those at the top of the organisation, it is
about empowering everyone in the workforce, group or partnership to be able
to make decisions and take actions at the lowest appropriate level and support
their growth and opportunity within a culture that is positive, productive and
enabling.

Whether facing down the gap between the rhetoric and reality of equity,
diversity and inclusion or plotting the critical path to net zero, we
need to be confident in the idea of being both ‘unfinished’ and open to
learning and change. Having the head, hand and heart aligned in ways
that improve our judgement and absorb new (and reflect on old) ways
of working feels like the foundational competency for 21st Century
leadership.
