I’m a rooky CEO of a small but mighty charity, Leukaemia UK. Before this, I
spent 20 years in the not-for-pro昀椀t sector in various senior leadership roles. I
think we’re seeing a kinder, more grounded, less grandiose, leadership style
generally, but especially in the not-for-pro昀椀t sector.
What does leadership mean to me? I think it’s about creating kind, 昀氀exible,
diverse, and focused cultures to help our teams live their best lives, in and
outside of work. That means always being vision driven, authentic but
consistently living your organisational values, resilient, showing up, getting
stuck in, and taking responsibility.
In our uncertain, perma-crisis world, where many of our bene昀椀ciaries and
supporters are struggling to be heard and demand outstrips our resources,
I also think not-for-pro昀椀t leadership must be courageous and commerciallycollaborative. Speaking up with and for our bene昀椀ciaries and making bold
decisions that are grounded in commercial acumen as well as partnership and
collaboration, gives us a better chance of serving our communities, making the
most of our resources, and accelerating our individual and collective impact.
Finally, it’s about building great relationships in and outside your organisation
and, always, making time for people. Time to listen, be curious, remove
ambiguity, create clarity, and learn. The best leaders I have worked with always
do this, and, to me, it remains the superfood of e昀昀ective leadership.

I became Chief Executive in 2020 and have been with Wiltshire Council for over
10 years, having previously worked for a couple of the London Boroughs and
North Somerset council. As a leader, I pride myself on knowing the people I
work with. For me, it is about building a team that has a core strength and
resilience to a昀昀ord them an unequivocal focus in the pursuit of the best
outcomes possible; all whilst retaining and modelling a public service ethos.
It is why the Steve Redgrave quote of “will it make the boat go faster?” has
become something of a mantra to me. As I look across the swathes of data we
hold, I invite answers to how we can turn the good in to outstanding?
