Leadership is a massive privilege. You can positively in昀氀uence the career
journey and lives of so many people. It’s a balancing act too though (and very
gendered) – be authentic and also likeable, show integrity but don’t overdo
the emotion, talk about what you do at the weekends but don’t share too
much. All of that while encouraging people to take some risk, be creative,
feel empowered, at a time when money is tight and you probably have to
take some tough decisions. And when you want to really make a reality of
diversity, in every sense of the word, e昀昀ecting change takes time. You have to
keep on the stu昀昀 that you believe in, keep pushing where you want to make
a di昀昀erence, and not let the organisation get distracted, wander o昀昀 and do
something else. Get it right and it’s incredibly inspiring and energising.

For me, Leadership means
•
Speaking up for what you believe is right and needed, especially when
others are not committing themselves,
•
And therefore being prepared to be wrong and to look daft!
•
Recognising that all (useful) work needs a team to deliver it, so committing
to that team
•
Staying current, informed and alert, ready to respond. And being honest if
you don’t know - don’t waste anyone’s time.
•
Being open to, and welcoming challenge.
•
Seeking out chances to promote others, building their leadership and
opportunities
•
Being obsessed with equity – and prepared to put in the hard, and often
unseen slog to make it a reality.
•
Being open to new ideas and prepared to take the high dive o昀昀 your
comfort zone into unpredictability and novelty.
•
Being con昀椀dent to step back when another leader is more
appropriate.
