I’ve always subscribed to the idea that people, organisations and societies are
always ‘un昀椀nished’ and we should expect and respect the value of continuous
learning. The last three years have presented some extraordinary challenges,
requiring us to lead organisations through crisis, change, uncertainty and
upset. The 昀氀uidity of thinking and practice required to lead through this kind
of societal turbulence has been greatly helped by an openness to explore what
we are collectively learning, and how we are using that learning – almost as a
daily practice. Whether facing down the gap between the rhetoric and reality
of equity, diversity and inclusion or plotting the critical path to net zero, we
need to be con昀椀dent in the idea of being both ‘un昀椀nished’ and open to learning
and change. Having the head, hand and heart aligned in ways that improve our
judgement and absorb new (and re昀氀ect on old) ways of working feels like the
foundational competency for 21st Century leadership.

Some would say my leadership journey started early when I was described
as ‘bossy’ in my school report aged 7, although my teacher did caveat the
statement with ‘I think Alison is just trying to help me organise the class!’
Leaving aside the inherent sexism in the description, throughout my career I
have stepped into spaces to motivate others; encouraging teams to do our best
work. My leadership journey has been driven by a clear sense of purpose - to
make a di昀昀erence. I think leadership is about the constant 昀氀ow of ‘tight and
loose’, stepping in and stepping back, adapting to context, collaborating well,
and holding discomfort through ambiguity. In that tension between tight and
loose I have made some right howlers, but I own those mistakes and thankfully
remain a quick learner. Building in re昀氀ection and recharge time has been the
other essential ingredient – I couldn’t learn without it!

It’s time to reconsider traditional notions of
leadership in terms of style, form, and effectiveness
and to recognise and cultivate leadership potential
wherever it may arise.
