It is the task of holding true to what the organisation, and actually the wider
sector is here to achieve. To cope with the day-to-day, yes. But to rise above
it in the quiet moments, to state that purpose at every set-piece and not be
afraid of appearing pompous or over blown. It is also to seek every opportunity
to lift up others around you – be intentional in seeing the potential of others
to get to your aims quicker and better than you ever could. The injustices and
deprivations of society today make leadership in our sector about painting a
future that is unrealistic to most, impossible even. Our bene昀椀ciaries deserve
nothing less.

We work with limited resources and ambitions beyond our means. So we must
focus where we can have the biggest impact for our community, and forge
the right partnerships to help us achieve our goals. Unless every member of
my team understands their role in delivering real change, we won’t succeed.
Clarity, from leadership, is vital.
Yet clarity is not enough. A vision must be compelling, inspiring, and believable.
People come with you if they can see the di昀昀erence they are making. A vital
aspect of leadership for me, is to clear the obstacles from my team’s path, so
they can 昀氀y. These barriers are often internal – capacity, systems, priorities.
They are never a lack of imagination.
I trust my team. I don’t have all the answers, and I learn constantly from my
brilliant colleagues. I see what we’re achieving for the bowel cancer community,
and I’m beyond proud.
