What3Words Leadership Locations Report - A celebration of leaders everywhere and their personal journeys 2023 - Final Design - Flipbook - Page 13
Sometimes I don’t sit back and note the journey I have been on since I 昀椀rst
become a ‘leader’. I couldn’t even say when the word leader becoming bigger in
my professional life than ‘manager’; may be back in 2010 when I realised I spent
more time chairing meetings than participating in them. Or, maybe when my
biggest motivation was seeing colleagues grow and develop, especially when it
was done in a team environment. Over the years I’ve had challenges and each
adversity has help shape my character. Successes and failures have helped me
grow, sometimes unexpectedly, but each time I emerged with a clearer vision.
Today I believe in empowering people more than ever; their achievements will
collectively generate a larger and longer lasting legacy than if I did it myself.
Often this means things are done slower than I would have done them, and
normally in a di昀昀erent manner, but that doesn’t make it wrong. I’m happier
leading people like that than being the centre of all that goes on.

Leadership for where I am now is about learning fast and embracing diversity
of views and discussions across a whole community. All of this takes place
whilst living my own personal values and keeping true to my leadership
principles every day, especially when it is tough. I remember all the things that
make me who I am and on a daily basis keep my integrity high and my courage
topped up to make the right decisions. I am standing up, leading my team, fully
engaging and helping the organisation move forward for the bene昀椀t of all the
people a昀昀ected by Motor Neurone Disease. The space we are currently in is
one of transformation, the vision for where we are going is exciting and clear. I
am mindful as CEO, I need to be decisive, brave and kind and ultimately lead us
to the amazing place where we need to be.

what you are supposed to be doing by doing the
things you are not supposed to do.” That’s what life
and leadership is all about.
