As Chief Executive of Services For Education (SFE), I have the privilege of
leading around 230 talented colleagues as we seek to make an impact in the
educational settings of Birmingham and further a昀椀eld. Our mission is to ‘bring
music and learning to life’ … and we do that in a myriad of ways. In my four
years as CE, leadership has been about enabling and supporting the team to
deliver that mission, whilst at the same time, along with senior colleagues,
plotting a path through the various (often unexpected) situations which come
our way – the most obvious being the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic,
and then more recently the broader societal economic challenges. I feel
strongly that leadership is about ensuring we stay true to our vision, creating a
culture which enables all colleagues to give of their best, and at the same time,
ensuring that SFE is well placed to serve our customers for many years to come.

I believe it was Albert Einstein who said ‘the more I learn, the less I realise I
know’. So it feels with my leadership journey. Over the last twenty years I’ve
been fortunate enough to hold senior leadership positions in many di昀昀erent
sectors: central government, local government, higher education and now
charity. You never stop learning as a leader. But in 2023 I feel I have never
had more to know. Many of the old leadership certainties I took for granted
have been blown wide apart through Covid, domestic and international
political instability, economic and environmental challenges and culture
wars. The world is ever more complex, unpredictable and open ended:
putting contradictory pressures on leaders to provide sense, structure and
stability. Hence my own leadership journey is reaching an exciting but slightly
intimidating crossroads, as I search for new directions to make meaning for
myself and others in this emerging new world.

Contested. I have been closely involved in debates about sex, gender and trans
rights, where views are passionately held. Learning. I chair the UK’s Institute of
Regulation and have had the privilege of meeting and 昀椀nding about regulatory
challenges across all sectors. Humbling. At the EHRC, I have met many people
who have faced discrimination or prejudice, whether because of their disability,
their race, their sexuality or other protected characteristic. I’m proud to lead an
organisation that can help to remedy those problems and make society fairer.
