4 to 15 June 2023Day 1Deauville to Chambord (363.7km)5 June 2023Photos: gerardbrown.co.ukOur night stop: Château de ChambordThe weather forecasters were right and this morning dawned bright and clear. The sea was just as blueas we’d left it last night and the beach just as inviting, but today we had other priorities; day one of theCarrera Riviera. An arch had been erected on the seafront and, at 08.31sharp, Fred Gallagher waved his drapeau Français to sendthe massive La France - which had rolled off the assemblyline only five years after Lartigue’s famous glass plates haddried - towards the clocks of Jim Smith and Graham Roodat the first Test at the Circuit de Deauville. Here the crewsshook off any first day nervousness and lay down somenumbers on their time cards over two laps of a beautifuland well cambered, tree lined facility. From the helter skelter of the track it was back to the publicroads for a long, civilised, run through the beautiful Normancountryside, famous bocage and network of minor roads.A Passage Control in Camembert ensured everyone was onthe right road. Just beyond the clocks of Andrew Kellitt andAudrey Rudd we were thrilled to see the townsfolk had laidon an impressive cheese buffet for us allowing the turophilesin our midst to enjoy several distinct varieties along withtraditional bread, pastries and other light refreshments.www.rallytheglobe.com
