Day 17
Ngorongoro (rest day)
The Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage Site and
“the jewel in Ngorongoro’s crown is a deep, volcanic
crater, the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera
in the world”, so says the official website.
After what we have seen for the last few days though, even
the resident zebra found themselves swimming between
patches of grassland.
The Serena Lodge is perched right on the edge of the
crater at a dizzying 2,500m and almost every room, not to
mention the bar and restaurant, look right down into it. It
was a wonderful spot for a rest day. There was a morning
game drive organised, which took the crews down onto the

crater floor - 700m below - where the prolific wildlife put on
a great display for us.
Away from the game viewing, and after the filth of
yesterday, the car wash facility in the car park was popular
this morning. So too were the sweep teams who, as usual,
made themselves available to help “undo what the road
dished out yesterday” according to Malcom Destro. He,
along with son Lloyd, Jamie Turner and Andy Inskip, did
whatever they could to make sure all of the cars, make it to
the finish.
There was also a fuel pump here and, like an oasis to
thirsty desert travellers, everyone paid it a visit.
Tomorrow we’re on the road again and heading back into
Kenya.
