Welcome to our 10th volume of Modern
Piping. It’s hard to believe that we are
already 10 books in and have brought you
over 600 pages worth of new and exciting
music, articles and competitions.
There are some new faces to add to Modern
Piping. We are super excited to introduce
Alisdair McLaren, Bruce Gandy, Scott
Wallace, Alex Gandy and Dougie McCance
to the team! Normally we have 6 composers
contribute to the book, but since it’s our
special 10th edition we thought we would
give everyone a Christmas surprise and have
everyone on board just for this volume.
Breton music is an amazing style of
bagpiping yet its origins and avant garde
techniques are largely unknown to the
Scottish piping scene. I know many pipers
do not even know that this incredible music
even exists. In this volume of Modern Piping
we are starting a series of articles studying
Breton music by none-other than the master
Breton player, Xavier Boderiou himself. On page
10 he will take you through an introduction of
Breton and give you a taste of what is to come!
There’s more to Breton music than what most
people think; I strongly urge you all to try and
learn the tunes and their origins as there is a
whole other area out there to explore in our
bagpipe music. From piping solos, bagad band
performances, singing and dancing to musical
duets, there is a lot to learn from the abundantly
musical Breton world.
Also, one of our newest Modern Piping
composers, Bruce Gandy, is launching a new
charity campaign that will aim to fund young
pipers and their musical ventures. “The Pipers’
Scholarship,” is a registered Canadian charity and
is coordinated via Bruce Gandy Music and the
Bruce Gandy Bagpiping Development Society
(Bruce Gandy Foundation). Contributions of $10
or more will grant the donator a free electronic
copy of Bruce Gandy’s Contemporary and
Traditional Music for the Highland Bagpipe Book
4. All of the money between now and Christmas
will go into a collective fund, which will be
awarded to a piper or pipers for tuition. Be sure
