SPECIAL FEATURE
BY MODERN PIPING
PIPER OF THE MOMENT
James Duncan Mackenzie

WHAT'S YOUR CURRENT SET UP?
One thing you would change about bagpipes.
I wouldn’t really change much. Its part of the charm that they are so temperamental!
It would be handy if they were all in a set key/pitch so it would be easier to play with
others.
I currently play an old set of drones which I
bought a few years ago from a man in Perth,
Scotland. They are made from ebony and
mounted in ivory. I’ve had quite a range of
differing opinions as to who the maker was but
any other pipes that look the same. I reckon
they could possibly be around 100 years old
and regardless of who the maker was, I’m very
pleased with how they sound. I mainly play in
concert pitch these days and my current chanter
well other instruments.
