YOM HAATZMAUT
(Israel Independence Day) A 4 Iyar
Celebrating the birth of the State of Israel in 1948,
Jews around the world hold parades and picnics.
The anniversary of receiving the Torah on Mt. Sinai
falls seven weeks after Passover. One of the three
pilgrimage festivals, it celebrates the end of the spring
harvest. The holiday’s customs include decorating
the home and synagogue with flowers, eating dairy
products and staying up the entire night studying.
TISHA B’AV
(Ninth Day of Av)
Tisha B’Av is a day of fasting and mourning for the
Holy Temples in Jerusalem, both of which were
destroyed on this day. The book of Lamentations is
read. Traditionally, no leather shoes are worn.
LAG B’OMER

Lag B’Omer is a break in the weeks of semi-mourning between
