Andrew Davies
Andy King
Integrity Manager, DRPG
Sustainability Officer, TTA
DRPG’s ambition is to reduce to as low as
possible the emissions of greenhouse
gases to the atmosphere and to protect
natural environments and biodiversity.
Through Andrew’s dedication to ESG, he
has taken charge along with the
agency’s CEO Dale Parmenter and other
members of the board, to drive DRPG’s
sustainability journey.
Andy has worked for TTA since 2018 and
even as Operations Systems Manager, the
green shoots of his passion and commitment to sustainability were apparent. He
was among the first cohort of the TTA
team to receive isla training in climate
literacy and defining sustainability for
stakeholders in 2020. In January 2021, he
was appointed to TTA’s newly created
Sustainability Officer position to enable
him to bring singular focus to driving the
agency’s vision and action.
As Integrity Manager Andrew’s role is
taking care of the environment, health
and safety, compliance, auditing and
managing the agency’s systems. He
ensures any ideas regarding
sustainability are directed through the
Sustainability Team and looks at how
they can be delivered in the best way.
Cascading sustainable development,
DRPG’s people, planet, profit business
plan and ensuring team members are
“on board” with sustainability are a core
part of Andrew’s responsibilities. “I am
proud to say our team understand
sustainability, climate change, the UN
SDG’s, carbon and how to run a
sustainable event. It is who we are. This is
supported with our systems and
certifications, ISO 14001 and ISO 20121,” he
says.
One of DRPG’s biggest impacts is the
decarbonisation of its buildings. The
agency has switched to renewable
electrical energy, added solar panels at a
cost of over £125,000 and is using
technology to further reduce energy
usage.
Working in collaboration with Syntiro
Associates, DRPG has designed and built
a sustainable event app called the
Events Sustainability Action Plan (ESAP). It
helps the team to think about different
elements of an event and the sustainable options available and produces a
dashboard linked to the UN SDG’s.
Keeping the team focused, being the
champion of sustainability and ensuring
he is always on hand to keep that
positive energy high, takes deep
commitment but Andrew is deeply
passionate about his role and is
extremely proud that DRPG was given the
Queens Award for Enterprise in
sustainable development.
Andy hit the ground running in his new
capacity and has comprehensively
re-mapped TTA’s sustainable project
journey. Rather than reinventing the wheel,
he aligned TTA’s operations and client-facing service delivery with the UN SDGs,
prioritising three primary goals (Climate
Action, Responsible Consumption &
Production, and Decent Work & Economic
Growth) plus six secondary goals to guide
TTA’s decisions and actions.
The agency will now by default, capture
waste and emissions data, calculate the
environmental impact of events and
recommend sustainable choices. Andy
takes a consultative approach from the
inception of every project, discussing with
each client their objectives, policies,
governance requirements and alignment
to UN SDGs, to identify opportunities for
sustainable choices and practices at
every touch point. Post-event, he manages the finalisation of data and shares
recommendations with the client for
future improvements.
Andy developed the business case for
deploying a more comprehensive carbon
accounting platform which expands the
scope of data collection and insight
reporting to include Scope 3 emissions in
TTA’s supply chain, not just those within
their direct control. He is leading the
project with the technology vendor to
implement and integrate this system,
which is due to go live this year.
Working closely with the SLT, Andy evolved
the company’s sustainability strategy for
People, planet and Prosperity, and has
created an internal training package
covering the “what, why and how” of
sustainability for all client-facing team
members.
Anna Green
Managing Director, Broadsword
Anna joined Broadsword in 2014 with a
clear vision to transform it into a socially
responsible business. As a former teacher
with two teenage children, and an
individual with a passion for building a
better world for young people, her
approach to sustainability is personal.
Anna believes that climate-positive action
should be at the forefront of how we lead
our lives and run our businesses.
In July 2022, under Anna’s leadership and
with the help of environmental consultancy C Free, Broadsword became a carbon
neutral business. This was the first tangible
milestone the agency achieved on its
sustainability journey. Following this, Anna
established a sustainability working group
in the business, and its first goal was to
become proficient in using TRACE so that it
could offer a carbon measurement
calculation to clients and influence their
decision making.
Key challenges faced were reluctance
from the team that using TRACE would
involve a lot of extra work and that
gathering the necessary data from
suppliers and venues might not be
feasible. So, Anna partnered with a client
to showcase a project to the rest of the
team and wider client base, using TRACE
for a brief to design and build an
exhibition stand. Selecting like-minded
suppliers was essential for the build and
the agency’s sustainability working group
devised a decision tree and checklists to
target those activities that had significant
impacts.
Inspired by fellow agencies, Broadsword
has also embarked on the B Corp
accreditation process and Anna has been
working to reshape all aspects of the
company. The decision tree has had a big
impact on members of the internal team
and clients to think more sustainably and
Broadsword’s senior leadership team has
embraced the B Corp application process,
with the aim to complete submission by
the end of 2023.
