Eleanor Train
Sustainability Assistant Manager,
Informa Events
Eleanor works as part of Informa’s global
sustainability team, who provide guidance
to all parts of the business. Her area of
work is in Informa Connect, which delivers
content-rich live and on demand events,
training and specialist digital content to
businesses and professionals.
Nearly 200 events and conferences in
Informa Connect now measure and
improve their ESG scores through
Informa’s innovative, open-sourced
Fundamentals system. Eleanor not only
provides guidance on the framework, but
personalised support to each of these
events to figure out what their biggest
impacts are and how they can create
positive change. Her work has been
pivotal in guiding and coaching event
teams to identify their environmental risks
and drive positive climate-reduction.
Whilst being a sustainability specialist
Eleanor has also immersed herself within
each of Informa Connect’s major
industries including finance, biotech,
pharma, food and marketing. She has
learnt about their audiences, what is
important to them and how they are
expecting Informa to support sustainable
change. Under Eleanor’s guidance these
expectations have been exceeded
multiple times with positive audience
feedback a testament to her work.
Eleanor has developed the internal
Informa guide to Carbon Neutral Event
Certification and Offsetting Process and
has been working directly with five events
to advise them on their journey towards
Net Zero. An example of the great work
Eleanor has done is achieving
CarbonNeutral Event certification with
IMpower. She led a working group to
define the data analysis process behind
the certification and has played an active
role in collecting all the required data to
ensure a detailed report for the auditing
team.
This process now serves as the roadmap
for other events wishing to pursue
CarbonNeutral Certification across
Informa. The potential impact of this is
huge, given the scale at which Informa
operates events.
Ellen Carpenter Green
Fabienne Tanczos
Senior Product Designer, HeadBox
Office Manager & PA to SLT,
OrangeDoor
Sustainability is something that Ellen is
keenly passionate about and in her role
as product designer at HeadBox, an
online meeting and event management
platform, she headed up the
development of a new tool to help clients
reduce carbon emissions.
After bringing together the heads of
procurement for travel and events at EDF,
EY and Accenture in September 2022 to
understand what was driving their
sustainability programmes, HeadBox
discovered that despite having very
ambitious Net Zero targets in place,
many clients were struggling to get
started on the event side. This gave Ellen
the opportunity to build a solution to
close this gap and significantly improve
corporate customers chances of
reaching their goals.
With support from the senior leadership
team at HeadBox, her team, and clients
who were always on hand to test out
concepts and prototypes during user
interviews, Ellen set about building
HeadBox Journeys. Given that travel
makes up the bulk of an in-person
event’s carbon footprint, and that local
travel to the venue isn’t typically covered
in clients’ Net Zero initiatives, this was the
key area of focus for the tool.
It allows bookers to enter travel
information for all their events’ attendees
and compare venue options based on
projected travel emissions for those
journeys. By highlighting the impact of
travel to venues to its 10,000 corporate
event bookers and giving them the tools
to make lower-carbon choices, Ellen
believes that HeadBox Journeys can drive
real change.
Getting Journeys live is the first step
towards HeadBox’s ambition of driving
deep carbon reductions in the events
industry. And it’s only the first tool in the
HeadBox Zero roadmap. By the end of the
year, the company will also be able to
offer carbon emissions data for travel
and venue energy use.
Achieving B Corp certification was truly a
team effort at OrangeDoor, but it would
never have been possible without the
dedication, organisation and drive of one
person.
Becoming a B Corp was a top-down and
bottom-up commitment from every part
of the business and the agency needed
two champions to make it happen – one
in the SLT and a person who had the ear
and love of everybody in the agency to
keep things on track. The person who rose
to the challenge was Fabienne Tanczos,
PA to the CEO and Leadership Team and
now, since her remarkable B Corp journey,
also Office Manager and Sustainability
Champion.
Of course, it was senior management who
enabled the new and improved policies to
be written, reviewed, verified and signed
off, but it required every department
integrating B Corp thinking into every
process to ensure that people were
treated in the right way (clients,
employees and suppliers) to get to
accreditation stage.
The effort was phenomenal from every
member of the business, but Fabienne
was the oil in the cogs and the champion
of the energy and mission. Not only did
she enable the company-wide initiatives
to become implemented by department,
but she also took it upon herself to
implement outcomes that she personally
had the ability to improve. Some of these
are general recycling, recycling unused
bottled water and water from carafes for
watering plants, ensuring all cleaning
products and bin liners are now
eco-friendly and changing the energy
supplier to renewables with Bulb.
OrangeDoor achieved B Corp certification
on 23rd November 2022. The business has
implemented a whole range of new and
improved initiatives that benefit everyone
and now measures 195 KPIs within the six
impact areas of Customers, Community,
Governance, Disclosures, Workers and
Environment.
