Samuel poured oil on David's head
and anointed him. David's older
brothers did not like that very much
because he was the smallest and
youngest and it was the custom for
the oldest son to be the first chosen
for any honors.
The next day, David’s three oldest
brothers went into the army with
their king, King Saul. Saul was the
first King of Israel. It wasn’t David’s
time yet.
David’s brothers took off to go to
battle with swords and shields, to
protect the land of Israel.
Israel had been invaded by an army
of Philistines.
