Our New Executive Team Member
Want to get to know yourself?
Write an introduction statement.
I am delighted to have been chosen to join the Local
1403 team and to be given the opportunity to introduce
myself in this edition of the Jumpline. My name is Yumanela
Candelaria and I know, I know… that is a mouthful. Cubans
are known for getting creative with their
names. Feel free to call me Yumi for
short. I was born in Cuba, and like many
Miamians, my family fled to the U.S. in
search of brighter opportunities in 1994.
Our story, like many others, is an exciting
one. I’ll save it for another time. I come
from a big extended family, but my nuclear
family consists of my mother, my father
and two brothers, with me being the eldest
of the three siblings. You know what that
means? I think I’m the boss! Jokes aside,
my family means the world to me. We are
very close and try to get together multiple
times throughout the year.
Yumanela Candelaria (Yumi)
Executive Coordinator
office manager in 2017. The experience I gained can be
summed up as instrumental to my growth during my mid
to late 20’s. Working in a challenging environment really
kept me on my toes. Keeping myself accountable for my
work and schedule, along with confronting any problem
that came my way, really helped me build my skillset in the
office environment and in life in general. My time working
with these patients made me an empathetic
listener, a great conversationalist, and an
amateur therapist. After so many years,
they weren’t just our patients, they were
part of my family.
In terms of hobbies and interests, I
am very much art inclined. I enjoy being
creative through many outlets: painting,
photography, cooking, and cake decorating
to name a few. Anything that I can use as
a creative outlet is essential to me. I also
really enjoy traveling and visiting new
places.
In my professional life, I worked for a
Podiatry practice for the past 7 years.
During my time there, I was promoted to
I am excited to join Metro-Dade
Firefighters Local 1403 as an Executive
Coordinator. My first day was July 25th so I
am fresh to the team. Initially, I was referred
for this position by a dear friend of mine
and I did not know a lot about Local 1403.
After working with the Local for the last
few months, I am learning how important
the union is to its members. I have met an
incredible group of people whose focus is
on the same goal, and everyone has been
extremely warm and welcoming. So far, I
have been involved in event coordination,
charities, several committees, and assisting
with Jumpline editing. There are many more
things to learn as I go, but I am eager to
continue my discovery of how to contribute
positively to Local 1403.
