Giving Back: What It Means
to Serve My Community
As a 昀椀re昀椀ghter with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and
a proud reservist in the U.S.
Air Force, giving back to the
community isn’t just something I do. It’s a part of who
I am. Born and raised in Miami-Dade County, I grew up
with a deep appreciation for
the people, places, and experiences that shaped me. Now,
I have the privilege of serving
this very community in ways
that go far beyond answering emergency calls.
For me, giving back means using my skills and my role to
uplift others, whether by responding to crises, participating in
charity events, or simply offering a helping hand or kind word.
It’s about building trust, fostering connections, and showing
that 昀椀re昀椀ghters aren’t just here for the tough times. We’re
here for the good times, too. That’s what makes our community stronger, more resilient, and more uni昀椀ed.
A Humbling Experience: Shopping with Alexia
One of the most memorable moments in my career happened recently during the Toys for Kids “Shop, Drop, and Roll
with a Fire昀椀ghter” event at the Doral Walmart on December
8, 2024. It was an opportunity for 昀椀re昀椀ghters like me to partner with children from Camillus House, an organization that
supports homeless and at-risk individuals. I had the honor of
shopping with Alexia, a nine-year-old girl whose sel昀氀essness
left a lasting impression on me.
The event was designed to bring joy to kids, giving them
a chance to pick out toys and gifts for the holiday season.
But Alexia didn’t focus solely on herself. Instead, she thought
about her family at home, carefully selecting gifts for them
before even thinking about what she wanted. That kind of selflessness from someone so young humbled me. It reminded
me of the power of small acts of kindness and how a single moment of joy can create ripple effects of hope and love.
Watching Alexia’s excitement as she chose something for her
loved ones was heartwarming and it reinforced my belief in
the importance of events like this.
The Bigger Picture
Charity events like “Shop, Drop, and Roll with a Fire昀椀ghter”
are more than just feel-good moments. They’re bridges that
connect 昀椀re昀椀ghters to the communities we serve. They allow
us to step outside the high-pressure situations of emergency
response and engage with people on a personal level. These
moments show that we’re not just 昀椀rst responders. We’re also
neighbors, mentors, and advocates who care deeply about
the well-being of the people we serve. Events like this help
strengthen trust and build relationships that last far beyond
the moment.
A Life of Service
When I joined Miami-Dade Fire Rescue in May 2023, I knew
I was stepping into a role that demanded courage, resilience,
and a commitment to others. But it’s moments like these, outside the 昀椀rehouse, that remind me why I chose this path. As
a 昀椀re昀椀ghter and an Air Force reservist, service is at the core
of everything I do. It’s about showing up. Not just for emergencies but also in the quiet, meaningful ways that build a
stronger community.
Why We Give Back
At its heart, giving back isn’t about the scale of the action. It’s about the intention. Whether it’s a life saved in an
emergency, a smile brought to a child’s face, or a moment
of connection with a neighbor, every act of kindness matters.
Alexia’s story, her thoughtfulness, and love for her family, is a
reminder of the kind of community we all strive to build. One
where we care for each other, support each other, and lift each
other up.
I’m proud to serve Miami-Dade County. I’m proud to be a
昀椀re昀椀ghter. And I’m proud to give back to the community that
has given me so much. Because at the end of the day, it’s not
just about the job. It’s about the people. They’re the reason
I do what I do.
