The City of Saskatoon helps its 3,275 employees plan for life after work with defined-benefit and definedcontribution pension plan, depending on the employee group.
W
ith the highest employment numbers
in the province’s history, Saskatchewan’s economy is firing on all
cylinders. From potash and uranium
mining to IT services, the province’s
exports are in demand the world over. But the strong
economic news misses an important point about Saskatchewan: the province features one of Canada’s most stable
and resilient economies that seems to avoid the boomand-bust cycles that periodically set back other economies
in the region.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Saskatchewan’s Top Employers competition, which we announce each
year in partnership with the Regina Leader-Post and the
Saskatoon StarPhoenix. Looking through the pages of this
year’s announcement magazine, it’s readily apparent that
the province’s best employers set a high bar when it comes
to attracting and retaining talented employees.
At many of this year’s winners, giving back to the local
community is second-nature and ingrained in the
organizational culture. Saskatoon-based BHP Canada
offers a remarkable matching program to encourage
employee donations to local charities: for every dollar an
employee donates, the company donates twice the amount,
to an annual maximum of approximately $150,000, to the
same charity.
Some employers on this year’s list go out of their way to
provide paid days-off to employees who volunteer at local
charities. These programs can be as simple and effective
as the single paid day-off each year offered by Yorktonbased Cornerstone Credit Union. These programs go as
high as three annual paid days-off to volunteer, found at
employers such as Saskatoon-based Nutrien and
Vaderstad Industries in Langbank.
At other winners, it’s all about encouraging employees
to form friendships at work and developing strong bonds
with colleagues. Saskatoon’s Croptimistic Technology
has a social committee that organizes a wide range of staff
events across the company, from office Christmas parties
to CFL games in Regina, Edmonton and Winnipeg.
Employee social events at Creative Options Regina aim to
encourage healthy habits through regular cooking nights,
spin classes and yoga sessions.
Behind all these successful programs is a recognition
that employees see work as something more than just a
paycheque or job title. The organizations chosen as this
year’s Saskatchewan’s Top Employers understand that there
are important social needs – from making a difference in
the community to forming friendships with colleagues –
that people also want from their jobs.
This morning, our editors released detailed ‘reasons for
selection’ explaining why each of this year’s winner’s was
chosen. Publishing these reasons is an important part of
the competition, providing transparency in the selection
of winners and raising the bar for other employers
interested in improving their workplace programs and
benefits. I encourage you to read these reasons at:
