The TransLink enterprise drives career success
E
rwin Hernandez
loves his role at
Coast Mountain Bus
Company (CMBC), a
subsidiary of TransLink
(South Coast British Columbia
Transportation Authority). Not
only does his work help move
Metro Vancouverites from point
A to B, but from work to home, to
friends and family, and to corners
of the region they otherwise may
not see.
In addition to the fulfilment his
work brings, Hernandez values
the support he’s received at every
stage of his professional journey.
“Across the TransLink enterprise,
we work together to support each
other,” he says.
“They don’t just help me be
the best I can at my job, but also
support me in being healthy and
whole. The culture brings out the
best in everyone – it’s contagious.”
The TransLink enterprise is responsible for Greater Vancouver’s
transportation network, including
everything from buses, a SeaBus
passenger ferry service and
SkyTrain to pedestrian and
cycling paths and major roads and
bridges. Working across several
companies, its 8,500 employees
enabled riders to make over 233
million trips in 2023.
Hernandez’s position as customer care work leader at CMBC
puts him at the heart of accessible
transit service programs, helping
provide service to people who
cannot independently use the
conventional transit system.
Though a hybrid work model
allows him to telecommute for
part of the week, Hernandez often
opts to work in person.
“I enjoy the energy of the office,”
he says. “I love multitasking, and
with new challenges and projects
on the go, it keeps me on my toes.”
“Adaptability and inclusiveness
are some of the enterprise’s core
values. We foster partnerships
and mutual support which helps
complex projects move forward
effectively,” says Elizabeth Chow,
senior diversity outreach advisor
on TransLink’s people and culture
team.
There’s both recognition and
celebration that no two employees
are the same.
“Employee well-being is at the
heart of everything we do,” says
Chow. “We look at our people

holistically. At each company, the
wellness programs, recruitment
process, and equity, diversity, and
inclusion initiatives help employees thrive and feel supported,
valued, and respected.”

Employee support programs
are as comprehensive as the
transportation services the enterprise provides, with training and
education geared towards swift
career advancement. Hernandez
says he’s especially benefited from
the mentorship program.
“It’s helped me build confidence
and become a stronger leader – it
also enabled me to identify my
purpose and equip me with the
tools to set and reach goals,” he
says.
Diversity is another core
corporate value. Chow says the
enterprise serves a diverse community and prioritizes building a
workforce across the organization
that is reflective of the community
it serves.
“It starts with the hiring
process at each company, where
we encourage applications from
diverse groups, such as Indigenous
Peoples, persons with disabilities,
and visible minorities. We strive
to create an inclusive experience
where applicants feel welcome and
respected for who they are from
their first interaction,” says Chow.
