Obituaries
Mary made many friends and
acquaintances throughout the years
and enjoyed the competitive side
of cattle showing. She constantly
inquired as to what pedigree cows
had calved and enjoyed thinking of
names to call the new born calves
from year to year. Sadly Mary passed
away suddenly but peacefully in her
home on the 22nd May 2023, aged
86 and after bravely enduring covid
lockdown and an illness for the last
few years of her life.

P.J. TIMLIN
I
n July 2023 the Western Simmental Club lost a great advocate
of the Breed with the death of P.J. Timlin. From Ballinrobe in
Co. Mayo, P.J. was an auctioneer by profession and was very
highly respected by all, be it buyers, sellers and Mart Staff.
P.J.’s first Simmental purchase in 1999 was Coolain Hannah, an in-calf
heifer from Thomas Jennings Clonfad, Co. Roscommon. When she
calved in January 2000, P.J. established the Mask Herd, and he had
a feeling that this Freighduff Brendan heifer was extra special and
how right he was. Mask Lill went on to win the Cashel Engineering
National Heifer Calf Championship at Mountbellew that year and the
following year won her class at the RDS Show at Goffs.
P.J. was part of a Simmental
breeders’ trip to the Perth Bull
sales in Scotland in 2003 and
made many friends over the
course of the tour. P.J. often
reflected on the trip citing how
he would be a match for anyone
on the rostrum at Perth.
P.J. became a very active
member of the Western
Simmental Club and held
the position of treasurer for
many years. P.J. cherished the
friendships made through his
involvement with the Club and
was always willing to help.
His friendly greeting for all
exhibitors always ensured the
Ballinrobe Show had a great
turnout of cattle and with P.J. as
livestock MC, the day was always
well remembered.
