WINSTON & MARY ASHMORE – CORAH SIMMENTALS
T
he Ashmore Family
farm in Ferns just
outside Enniscorthy
Co. Wexford. They
were first introduced
to the Simmental breed when
at the RDS Spring Show in 1973,
where the impression created
by the bull Hamlet and a pen
of his heifers exhibited by
Dovea is remembered to the
present day. A decision was
made to establish a Pedigree
Simmental Herd and an import
licence was applied for and in
1975 a consignment of 8 heifers
arrived in Ferns direct from
Austria.
Always keeping a watchful
eye on bulls at the Tully Test
Station, Winston purchased his
first stockbull Tower Gubble a
Tully graduate in 1979 from J.P.
McDonnell from Monaterboice,
Co. Louth. Tower Gubble was a

son of Midas who was a halfWoods IFJ
brother of Mist. Mist is notable
for siring among others Star
Hugo (IS2) and Star Fanny who in turn was the dam of Camus Solitare. Tower Gubble went on the be
judged as Overall Breed Champion at the RDS Spring Show in 1980. The next stockbull purchased was
none other than Star Rover from the Prumplestown Herd in Castledermot, Co. Kildare. Star Rover was
later sold to Dorothy Moffat in Scotland, and he went on the sire Innerwick Chieftain who in turn sired
a Perth Champion. Both stockbulls were the foundation to which all cows in the herd today can be
traced back.
Both Winston & Mary have been very actively involved in the Simmental Society with Winston serving
as Council Member for the Southeast Club and also holding the office of President of the Society. Mary
served as Secretary of the Southeast Club for 15 years during the late eighties and early nineties.
Today, Winston & Mary together with their son Julian run their 25-cow pedigree herd alongside their
tillage enterprise. Their reputation for breeding quality cattle has enabled the Corah herd to establish a
solid repeat customer base in the Southeast with both Suckler & Dairy farmers.
The passion for Simmental cattle in the Ashmore Family is as strong today as when the Austrian
importation arrived.
Needless to say, this will ensure that Simmental animals will be seen grazing along the banks of the
Slaney for many years to come.
