ALICE MULLEN – DRUMNEIL SIMMENTALS
A
lice Mullen
purchased her
foundation
Simmental
in 1975 - a
Siegfried heifer, in calf to
Hamlet and established
the Drumneil herd on the
borders of Monaghan
and Armagh.
In over four and half
decades since then, she
has produced many
prizewinning cattle at
National and regional
shows and continues to
supply breeding stock to
pedigree and commercial
herds north and south
of the border. Alice was
also a strong supporter
of the National Bull
Performance Test Centre
in Tully, providing may
bulls for test programs
there. In 1992 Alice sold
Drumneil Bolero to the
Northeastern Cattle
Breeding Society, which Alice Mullen pictured receiving the 2022 Hall of Fame award from Junior Minister for Agriculwas based at Ballyhaise, ture Pappa Hackett.
Co. Cavan and later
amalgamated into NCBC. This Magheracrigan Special sired bull was out of a homebred Herrscher dam
Drumneil Princess who in turn was out of a Seigfried dam.
Alice was elected to the offices of Chairperson and Secretary of the Northeastern Club, positions she
held for many years. Having established a strong promotional team in the Northeast, she travelled with
them throughout the 9-county region devising and promoting numerous events for the furtherment of
the breed.
Throughout her various terms on the National Council, Alice represented the Irish Simmental Society
as its Delegate at the World Simmental Council meetings. Her networking and negotiating skills
played a crucial role in securing the Simmental Word Congress for Ireland in 2000.
The Congress proved a wonderful opportunity to showcase the quality of Irish Simmental to the
delegates from the 22 attending countries. The planning and running of the Congress involved a huge
amount of additional work, and Alice carried much of this extra workload, quietly, and mostly behind
the scenes. The smooth running of the Congress was widely applauded by the delegates, and it served
us well in enhancing the reputation of Irish Simmentals throughout the world.
