The Albany was bought in
1974 by the 'Hutchinson
Leisure Group'. Closing as a
single screen cinema on the
1st February 1975. Two mini
cinemas were built inside of
the old cinema, each seating
193 and was built in the former
raised rear section of the
auditorium. The front part of
the old stalls was also
converted and became a 500
seat bingo club.
The Twin cinemas and Bingo
renamed 'Astra' Cine1 & 2,
reopened as 'The Astra
Entertainment Centre' on the
5th June 1975. However, In
1991 the bingo closed and the
area it occupied was
converted into Cine 3, a 300
seat cinema. This made its
debut on the 20th December
1991. Later Cine 3 was split in
two making a total of 4
screens. Sadly, by the 1990s
cinema audiences in the UK
started to dwindle and The
Astra finally closed it's doors
on the 4th April 1995.
